What a break of gauge is and what happens there
A break of gauge is the point where two rail networks of different track widths meet and through-running stops. Freight must either be moved into a wagon of the other gauge, have its bogies changed, or travel on variable-gauge axles. Everything else about the routing follows from that.
Why breaks of gauge exist
Track gauge is the distance between the inner faces of the two rails. Early railways were built by different companies, in different countries, before anyone agreed on a standard — and once thousands of kilometres of track are laid, changing the width is not a decision anyone takes lightly.
So the gauges froze in place. Most of Europe settled on 1435 mm. The Russian Empire, and later the Soviet Union, standardised on 1520 mm, which is why Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic states, Moldova and Central Asia run on broad gauge today.
Where the two systems meet — at the Ukrainian border with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania — there is a break of gauge. It is not a defect in the network. It is the seam between two networks.

In practice, on the Ukraine–EU corridor, most freight crosses by transshipment. It needs no special wagons and it suits bulk, palletised goods, steel, timber and machinery — which is most of what moves.
What a break of gauge costs you
Time, first. The crossing adds a stop, and how long that stop lasts depends on what the cargo is and how it is presented — a hopper of grain empties in minutes, a covered wagon of loose sacks takes hours.
Handling, second. Every transfer is a chance for damage, and for some commodities a measurable loss. This is why consignments that will end up on a truck anyway are often better transshipped straight to road, skipping a leg.
Planning, third, and this is the one people underestimate. A shipment planned as if the border were transparent will stall there. The break is a fixed feature of the route and belongs in the schedule from the start.
Where it happens on this corridor
Ukraine borders four EU countries, and each border has crossing points where the two networks meet. In Romania, the northern crossing runs through the Vicșani–Vadul Siret area, in Suceava county.

What exactly is track gauge?

Why can't the wheels just be adjusted?
On ordinary freight wagons the wheels are pressed onto the axle at a fixed spacing. Variable-gauge axles exist but are specialised and not widespread in this region's freight traffic.
Is transshipment or bogie exchange better?
It depends on the cargo and what is available on the route. If the goods finish their journey by road, transshipping straight to a truck removes a step.
How long does the crossing take?
It varies with cargo type and presentation more than with distance. Bulk in a hopper is fast; loose goods in a covered wagon are slow.
Does the break add cost?
Yes — handling, and possibly storage. It is a fixed feature of the corridor, so it belongs in the budget rather than coming as a surprise.
