Cargo
Transshipment of steel and metal products
Steel and metal are among the heaviest cargoes crossing the gauge break, and most of it has to be lifted rather than tipped or scooped. We transship coils, plate, sections, rebar and billets at our terminal in Dornești using 50 and 80 tonne mobile cranes.
What we handle
- Coils — hot and cold rolled, lifted with the appropriate rigging.
- Plate and sheet, in bundles or loose.
- Sections — beams, channels, angles.
- Rebar and wire rod, bundled.
- Billets, blooms and slabs.
- Pipe and tube, bundled or individual.
Why steel is different from other cargo
It concentrates a lot of weight in a small footprint. That matters for how a wagon is loaded, how the ground under the crane behaves and how the piece is slung.
It is also easy to damage in ways that are not obvious until much later — a coil pinched by a chain, a plate bent across a bearer. Handling is chosen with that in mind, and we ask what the receiving mill expects before we pick a method.
How the transfer runs
- The wagon is positioned within crane reach.
- Each piece is rigged according to type — slings, C-hook, spreader or clamps.
- It is lifted across to the receiving wagon or truck, or set into storage.
- Loading is arranged for weight distribution over the axles, not just for fit.
- The load is secured for the onward leg.
What we need from you
- Product type and form.
- Weight per piece and total weight.
- Dimensions, especially coil diameter and width.
- Whether packaging must stay intact.
- Any handling restriction from the mill or the buyer.
- Direction of travel and onward mode.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Can you handle coils?
Yes, with rigging suited to the coil rather than generic slings.
What is the maximum weight per piece?
Our cranes are 50 and 80 tonnes; usable capacity depends on the radius. Send the piece weight for a firm answer.
Can steel be stored before it moves on?
Yes, indoors or outdoors depending on the product and how long it waits.
Do you load onto trucks as well?
Yes, wagon to truck and truck to wagon.
Who is responsible for securing the onward load?
We secure what we load, to the requirements of the carrier taking it on.
Moving steel across the border?
Tell us the product, the tonnage and the direction and we will come back with a price.
