Freight wagon types and what each one carries

Freight wagons are grouped by how they load: covered for weather-sensitive goods, flat for long and oversized pieces, gondola for heavy bulk, hopper for free-flowing bulk, tank for liquids and container wagons for ISO boxes. The type decides how transshipment is done and how long it takes.

Why the type matters at a gauge break

When cargo has to change gauge, the wagon type decides the equipment, the pace and sometimes whether the operation is possible in the form requested.

Palletised goods in a covered wagon move with a forklift, through side doors. Bulk in a gondola needs a grab or tipping. A heavy piece on a flat wagon is lifted with a crane. These are different operations with different rhythms — which is why the first question we ask about a consignment is not the tonnage but what it is riding in.

The main types

TypeDescriptionTypical cargo
CoveredEnclosed box with sliding side doorsPalletised goods, bags, cartons, weather-sensitive freight
FlatFlat deck, no sides or with folding stanchionsLong pieces, timber, machinery, steel sections, oversized loads
GondolaOpen-topped box with high sidesHeavy bulk: ore, aggregates, coal, scrap metal
HopperSloped walls, discharge from belowFree-flowing bulk: grain, cement, granulates

These are generic categories. Each railway administration has its own series with different dimensions and payloads. We do not publish tonnage figures for generic types — the payload is the one stencilled on the individual wagon.

What each means in practice

Covered wagons

Access is through side doors, which caps package size and slows the work. Best protection for the cargo, slowest to empty if the load is not palletised.

Flat wagons

The easiest type for a crane: the load is reachable from above with no walls in the way. This is where we work most often with mobile cranes, particularly for machinery and oversized pieces.

Gondolas

Bulk comes out with a grab or by tipping, depending on the material and the terminal. Whether the cargo is dry or has compacted in transit changes the pace.

Hoppers

Gravity discharge through bottom gates — fast, provided there is receiving infrastructure underneath.

Tank wagons

Liquid transfer is a specialised operation with its own rules, particularly for dangerous goods. It is handled separately from solid cargo.

The loading gauge trap

Wagons on 1520 mm track differ from European ones by more than wheel spacing: the loading gauge — the envelope the load may occupy — is generally more generous in the former Soviet network.

The practical consequence catches out new shippers. A load that sits comfortably inside a Ukrainian wagon can exceed the European loading gauge even though its weight is unremarkable. The check belongs before dispatch, not on arrival, because the alternative is re-arranging the cargo at the border.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How many tonnes fit in a wagon?

It depends on the type and series. The payload is stencilled on the individual wagon; generic figures would be misleading.

Which wagon is used for timber?

Usually a flat wagon, often with stanchions to retain the load.

And for grain?

A hopper, discharged by gravity, or a covered wagon for smaller quantities and bagged goods.

Which type is easiest to transship with a crane?

A flat wagon — the load is reachable from above with nothing obstructing the slings.

Will my load fit the European network?

The loading gauge has to be checked, not just the weight. Send the dimensions and we will check with the rail operator.

Not sure which wagon you need?

Describe the cargo — type, dimensions, packaging — and we will say how it is best transshipped.
