Export

Exporting from the EU to Ukraine by rail

Cargo leaving the EU for Ukraine travels on 1435 mm standard gauge and has to be moved onto 1520 mm broad-gauge wagons before it can continue. We do that transfer at our terminal in Dornești, in northern Romania, with storage available where the consignment has to be assembled before dispatch.

The same barrier, the other way round

Everything that stops an incoming Ukrainian wagon at the border stops an outgoing European one. The gauge does not care about direction.

In practice the export flow has one difference: consignments are often assembled from several sources before they go. That makes storage more central than it is on the import side.

How an export consignment is handled

  • Cargo arrives by truck or by European wagon, sometimes in several batches.
  • It is unloaded and held in storage until the shipment is complete.
  • When the broad-gauge wagons are available, it is loaded across.
  • Heavy or awkward pieces go by crane.
  • The wagon is secured and dispatched onto the Ukrainian network.

What tends to go east

  • Industrial equipment and machinery.
  • Construction materials and prefabricated elements.
  • Steel products and structures.
  • Vehicles and rolling equipment.
  • Packaged and palletised goods.
  • Spare parts and components.

What to send us when you enquire

  • What the cargo is and how it is packed.
  • Total weight and the weight of the heaviest single piece.
  • Dimensions, especially anything that is out of gauge.
  • How it arrives at the terminal and roughly when.
  • Whether it needs storage before dispatch, and for how long.
  • Any handling constraints — fragile, no side loading, lifting points only.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Can cargo arrive by truck and leave by rail?

Yes. Truck to broad-gauge wagon is one of the routine operations here.

Can several batches be consolidated?

Yes. They can be accumulated in storage and loaded as one consignment.

Do you handle export formalities?

No. We are the terminal operator, not a customs broker or freight forwarder.

Is there a minimum volume?

Not a fixed one. Tell us the consignment and we will say whether it makes sense here.

Can you load oversized pieces?

Yes, with the cranes, within the limits of the receiving wagon and the route.

Sending cargo into Ukraine?

Describe the consignment and the timing and we will come back with how it would run.
